Labour have had their Hague (young inexperienced told the party what it wanted to hear)

Now they're due their IDS (unable to accept why they lost so think a more extreme version is required)

As I said, it just smacks of Michael Foot, who I thought was a tremendous human being but a totally unelectable party leader. Labour committing suicide if they elect him. An opposition in disarray actually isn't good for anyone.

He speaks the most sense, bar immigration where he, like the Left, are utterly hopeless. He's no chance of winning it though. I'll actually laugh if that Tory tart Kendall gets it.

Sounds all very reasonable, and you are right, it should be enough but circumstance for everyone are different.

I dont know their precise figures but for whatever reason its dire enough to get free food.
All I know is that this hard working couple are on their uppers and still struggling and its not because they are lazy, workshy, uneducated or lacking any forward ambition as some have stated here.

Isn't Corbyn in with a decent shout? That has Michael Foot written all over it. Decent man, honest convictions but no chance of getting elected.

Not to mention the fact their next leader will be more of the same.

Can't see Labour ever getting back in power. The SNP put paid to that.

Re: Today's budget
It's fucking hilarious that the right wing fruits on here are crying over this budget from the party they voted in. Despite there being a lot I disagree with - especially the pathetic measures regarding minted tax dodgers - I thought it would be far worse.
It's very simple for the Tories if they want to stay in power for a generation; introduce true one nation conservatism and the hapless, sell out Labour party are fucked unless the revert to their true roots.
That and keeping their weirdo far right backbenchers in check over the EU referendum. Which will be some achievement.

I'd point out that the low paid have seen their taxes cut too and that Jack Monroe has shown it's perfectly possible to eat healthily on a budget. I can't stand her personally but she's right.

Re: Today's budget
The living wage is an excellent idea. We are currently borrowing too much money. We're then taking that money to give to people in welfare payments.

We're one per cent of the worlds population, five percent of the worlds economy but 7% of the worlds welfare spending.

We spend more on tax credits than we do on the police and counter terrorism staff. Indeed tax credits cost more than the whole home office budget.

Companies can afford a modest pay rise. We've cut their corporation tax significantly and will cut it further to help pay for this plus we're giving small firms a bigger national allowance so they can have four staff on the living wage paid for from the allowance.

As for luxury cars, I don't see what the issue is.

And as for mps wages the point still stands that it's a recommended increase and it's done by an independent agency. You'd have to abolish it to stop it and everyone wanted an independent agency.

So that leaves them 20% of his earnings yes? Plus her wages, plus child benefit, plus the tax credits they would get?

Utilities are like what, £150 a month absolute tops?

So even if she worked 2 hrs a day on minimum wage thats like £250 a month. Plus chb so thats a further £140?

But hairy with respect the bankers have paid through increased taxes, the banks have higher taxes than they did under Labour and Osborne yesterday announced a new bank profits tax.

You cant just GET food from Foodbanks. You have to prove your circumstances. If they had the brass they wouldnt get the entitlement.

I used to go to school with the kids Dad, Ironically, his Mother taught us. I know these people on a personal level. They aint spongers and they are in the shit. Their rent is 700ish a month which is about 80% of his earnings.

penners28 4:09 Thu Jul 9
Re: Today's budget
but they would be getting loads in tax credits if they both work and are on low pay? what do you call high rent?

it sounds like a horrible situation but how do you know what the parents are spunking their money on?

Re: Today's budget

The Dad works full time , the Mum fits in around school. I know its hard to believe but the case you mentioned has to be a rare case.

The wages here in Cornwall for unskilled is NMW and the rental prices are astronomical. That child in my class was sent to school today with 1 slice of buttered bread and a fun size Chocolate bar and Ritz Cracker....He got that stuff from the food bank that his working parents are forced to go to. He is now sitting in the class eating my Sandwiches like he hasnt eaten for a month.

I dont know about the case you have mentioned but what Im seeing in the class does not bare it out.

In my case, Im an Ex Copper and now one of the highest qualified TA's in the county, working at the school from 10 to 4pm and I still have to do a shitty second job from 4am to 9 am just to make ends meet.

My wife works part-time at the same place

We work hard and longer than most and we are only a couple of paydays away for the foodbanks

I know everyone here in a self made man..Blah blah, but even those who have a good education and a good job are still suffering.

As for those for you who dont see the poverty, Aint you blessed....

Re: Today's budget
I've known a lot of people who have taken every benefit and government hand out that's on offer. I've also known many others who don't bother with any even though they are entitled.
I equally know people who own their own businesses who are very good and work all hours given to them and I know others who consistently fail.
The fact is some people will succeed and a lot will not. No matter what system you have in place.
So. The ones that do well are always despised by those that don't.

WHOicidal Maniac 12:46 Thu Jul 9

surely if they both work though they will get plenty of hep at the moment in terms of tax credits etc? Do the parents work full time?

I just dont believe, in this age of bloated benefits payments, that people have to go to food banks. or if they do, they need to learn how to budget better so they have money for food.

family in the paper today moaning about the cuts:

he is a prt-time lecturer on 24k p/a
she works part time on min wage
3 kids, £682.50 per mth in tax credits plus your child benefit

you tell me why a family like this shouldnt be affected by the cuts. one of the parents can get off their ass and work full time as far as i'm concerned.

I do make a lot of sweeping generalisations however I have seen all this with my own eyes. look up the definition of poverty and look at how the majority of benefits claimants live.
